Computer error issues wrong tax codes

A HMRC computer error has issued thousands of incorrect tax codes to Scottish workers, leaving them seriously out of pocket.

The new computer system sent out the wrong codes and many workers were left with between £120 and £700 LESS in their April pay packet.

The hardest hit were those who were mistakenly put in the higher 40% tax bracket.

25 million tax codes are issued by HMRC so even a small percentage of that affects thousands of tax payers.

The problem is, many of us don’t check our tax codes and if the discrepancy is relatively small we may not even notice that we’ve paid too much tax.

We urge everyone to check their tax code, check the amount of net pay they have received and check the amount of tax they’ve paid. You can use our free income tax calculator to see if you may have paid too much.

If you think you have, then we can help you get your money back through a tax rebate. Download a claim form here or contact us and we’ll send one out to you.

DON’T be complacent – HMRC does make mistakes and you should make sure you’re not one of the unlucky ones.
