A tax rebate or tax refund is a refund of taxes when the tax liability is less compared to the taxes paid. If you are jobless, then you can claim for a much required income tax refund from the tax man. If you were working during the tax year but were later laid off for whatever reason, you can possibly claim some money back.
HMRC’s role in tax rebates
The HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs) assumes that you will be working for the entire tax year and taxes you accordingly. However, if you are unemployed or laid off for some reason, it means you have not worked for the entire tax year. Thus, you may be due a rebate.
You may have got a P45 soon after leaving the job. To calculate whether you are due a tax refund or not, you need to enter the gross pay till date and the tax paid into the tax rebate calculator.
Income tax rebate for the unemployed
It takes around 4-6 weeks for claiming income tax refund, if you are unemployed. A large backlog in the tax office may lengthen the process further.
