Sometimes you can pay too much tax to the government so may be liable for a tax rebate.

Filing for a tax refund

You need to first analyse whether you are eligible for a tax refund. For this, you need to check your documents and look at the amount of salary you earned and tax you paid during the last tax year. Tax refunds are based on last year’s earnings and tax liabilities. It is thus important that you disclose your complete income to avoid any penalties from the income tax department.

Procedure to claim a tax refund

Claiming tax back can be a complicated process and is best left to the professionals. However, if you want to try to claim tax back yourself you need to have the right documentation about your employment history.

You have the right to claim a tax refund if additional taxes have been paid by you. And you can even claim tax back for up to 6 years if you can prove your employment history and have hence overpaid taxes.
