In simple terms, tax rebates are tax refunds which you receive when you have paid tax in excess. If you have paid too much in taxes, you receive a tax refund cheque from the government with the excess amount.

Why might you be entitled to a tax rebate?

People are due tax rebates for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is that you have paid excess tax to the government as emergency tax and it is the duty of the government to pay back the excess amount.

A few other instances for tax rebates

There are many other instances where you will be entitled to a tax rebate, but the amount might not be not as high as in the above mentioned case. You will only get a rebate if you were overcharged with your taxes. If you changed jobs or spent a period out of work, you may be entitled to some amount of money back and it is worth looking into.
