You are expected to pay tax if you live or work in the United Kingdom. If you work less than 16 hours a week you might be entitled to some form of benefit from the government. Have a look at the following points to find out.

Work out the hours that you worked in the last financial year

Add up the hours that work every week. If you work for more than one company add these hours up as well. In case the number of hours varies from week to week, calculate the average hours per week.

Do you work more than 16 hours a week?

Based on the income earned during the financial year you may be entitled to working tax credit. This is only applicable if you work for more than 16 hours a week. If you are on a low income, you may also be entitled to housing benefit and council tax benefits. Child tax credit is also applicable if you have children.

If you work for less than 16 hours a week

If you work for less than 16 hours a week you may be entitled to Jobseekers allowance or income support. It should be noted that your claim for these benefits may be rejected if you live with a partner who works for more than 24 hours a week.
