A brand new year is starting and there is every reason for you to try and set the record straight with your finances. 2012 may not be as uncertain as 2011 seems to have been for a wide variety of people working at different levels across different sectors and industries, but last year taught us all a lesson in terms of how the economy can affect ordinary people.

You can start by giving your tax documentation a thorough examination. The HMRC is always looking into these matters but it has an extensive backlog and it is a time-consuming process. You only have your own tax matters to pore over so it should not take anywhere near as long even without any expertise in the field.

You may be able to highlight any errors you perceive with relation to the figures you have been paying. If they are too high, it is a good idea to start 2012 on the right foot by flagging up the mistakes and getting the HMRC to investigate further. If you are strapped for time or you want expert advice, claims agencies are known for the work they do with relation to tax refunds.
