Never assume that you have missed out when others are getting rebates

You may have heard about your friends, your colleagues or members of your family receiving tax rebates because they have been charged excessively at some point by the tax man. In the absence of a tax rebate for yourself, you may feel as though you have missed out on that little unexpected windfall, but you cannot necessarily be sure of that until you have done a little digging. You may find there is more than meets the eye in your recent tax history.

Sometimes cases are overlooked when the HMRC runs its checks and monitors the tax people pay. Sometimes the gaps of information are large enough for situations to look perfectly correct when in fact they are completely wrong and a working member of the public suffers for it. It is important to make sure that the victim isn’t you!

You can do this by looking into the tax you have paid over the last six years. Compare and contrast the figures you were meant to pay (tax calculators are available online to help you do this) with the figures you have records of paying. If the latter work out more than the former then you need to chase a rebate.
