There are many reasons why you may have overpaid or underpaid tax on your income or your pension, and if your tax is wrong you can claim a tax refund. However, it is surprising how many people decide not to file a tax refund application, either because they can’t be bothered to chase up the refund or they think the amount they are owed is too small to be concerned about.

Here are a few reasons why you should always claim the tax refunds you are entitled to:

Even a small tax refund can be useful

Even a very small sum can be useful to have, especially in an emergency. It could pay for a week’s shopping, a tank of petrol or even a household bill, so it is always worth claiming tax rebates even for small amounts.

It’s easy to find out if you can claim

If you want to save yourself the time and effort of filing a tax rebate form when you aren’t sure whether you are owed any tax back, you can use a tax rebate calculator (which you can find online) to work out your tax refund entitlement.

Tax refund applications can be quick and easy

Many people think it’s time-consuming or complicated to apply for a tax refund, but the form you need to fill in is actually quite straightforward. You can even get a tax rebate company to file the claim on your behalf.
