A lot of people assume that the income tax they pay on their earnings is always correct, as it is calculated by HM Revenue & Customs, the department responsible for income tax and tax rebates. However, there are a few different things that can go wrong when calculating income tax, such as:

• The wrong information being given to HMRC
• Your employer putting you on the wrong tax code
• Your circumstances changing within the tax year
• You having a very complicated work situation (i.e. you have multiple jobs or sources of income)

All of these things can result in you paying too much income tax. This is why it is always worth taking the time to check your income tax and make sure that it is correct. It could be that you’ve been paying too much tax for years, meaning that you could be due a substantial tax rebate.

A tax rebate is easy to claim. You can use a tax rebate calculator to check your eligibility and estimate how much you may be owed, then it’s simply a matter of filling out a form and waiting for HMRC to do the rest.
