Can I claim a tax rebate on my tools?

Yes, provided you are an employed mechanic and use your tools to carry out your job.

How much can I claim?

Your rebate will be around 15% of your total spend. There is no limit to how far back we can claim.

How long does it take?

Around six to eight weeks, depending on the HMRC.

I don't have any receipts. Can I still claim?

Yes, just ask your tool rep for your "customer activity list". They will know what you are talking about.

I've heard on forums like MoneySavingExpert that PAYE ecmployees can't claim this. Is this true?

No, this is not true but many people are under the impression it's not possible. Forms EIM36610, EIM50700, EIM36910, help sheet 206, available from HMRC, explain why, but it is a very complicated thing to do if you're claiming for more than one year.
